So I watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (時をかける少女 Toki o Kakeru Shōjo) and I.. hmm, can't decide if I liked it.

I've said before time travel is an iffy topic to tackle, and I don't quite like how it was done here.. but that's my personal bone to pick. There are other questions as well, and the more I think about it, more of them arose so much so now I'm filled with them.. But there was one part though where I got caught up in the moment that I suppose did make the movie worth it, and it's in one of the images below. :)

Pacing wise, it was a bit slow in the beginning, and by the time it picked up, it was almost over. If I wasn't folding my mountain of laundry, I might not have the patience to sit through it. Style and colour wise, it was okay, it didn't stand out very much but it suited the mood of the story nicely. Mm that's all I've got to say. :D

Watch it here.

and one last one for the lols (that's me btw, photobombing J's dad, and that's my MIL in the background hehe):

Finally, today I found out what it really was. Haha! Took me long enough...

horror of horrors.

so last night i went back to my parents' place because they had a harvest of bananas and asked me to go back for some. the hubby wasn't free so i went back alone which i'm usually okay with cos it's my old home and i practically grew up there.. but then again, i haven't been back in a while as they have moved out, only that they go back there every morning to cook and prepare soyabean drinks for sale. oh have I mentioned my old house is right smack in the middle of a Chinese cemetery? it doesn't bother me though---I've never had any eerie experiences of any sort. it's just a place where home was.

the thing is, it is not so much the spirits than the serpentine that bother me. as i was reaching home, i remembered how my parents have been telling me about their recent encounterSSS with SNAKES OMG. if there are two things that i am most terrified of, they are syringes/needles and SNAKES. just thinking about them can make me stop dead in my track---i have vivid imagination, what can i say. anyway they told me about this HUGE snake (i think it's python) that they have seen around and how fast that bloody thing moves and all.

my imagination was already going wild the whole time but i didn't realise how scared i was until i parked. my parents were not home and it was quite dark all around. i left my car ignition and lights on and i walked to the back of the house to get in. the house is this dilapidated structure (my parents built it around the time i was born and it's made of wood and hasn't stood the test of time---anyone up for a tour haha) and it wasn't very well lit and images of snakes flying out from nowhere and mauling me had me close to tears - ok I cried a bit - it was a page right out of a horror movie okay no kidding.

i was so petrified that i stood at some spots for so long, wondering if i should turn back.. but i kept inching forward (like a classic protagonist who's gonna die in the next scene). getting into the house took spy-like ability (old house, tricky locks) and i was using my phone as flashlight but it was running out of battery so i had to get in before it was all dark. of all the days i didn't keep it charged.. -_-

i got in after some fumbling about and i stopped and looked at every spot in my house where i've previously seen a snake, half expecting one there. and i couldn't see where my parents left the bananas and they didn't pick up my calls until a good few times later. all i could only think about was my imminent death by then.. stuff like if i would have time to text everyone a farewell message, and which order that would go, or if i should just send a mass text in case i died quick.. my heart was pounding the whole time and my body was so tense and i probably heard my blood coursing through every vein and capillary.

thank God kitty was home and her meowing provided some assurance to me. i suppose if there were danger she would be hissing with hair standing up instead of rubbing herself against me and trying to get me to pet her, right? i was told that the bananas were in my old room which is like this spooky and dark room and again i contemplated whether to just leave empty handed. but i thought if i survived this, my parents might not be so pleased so i soldiered on. i ran in, quickly took a comb and dashed out of the room and patted the cat and left the house with my heart intact but really, what an ordeal i had to suffer for a bunch of bananas.

home schome, i am srsly never ever going back there alone again.

brain teaser

Quick, do you know this symbol Ψ is and what you get when you add it to my name??

No? Hehe! You get ...

Geddit, geddit?!?

...

That, exactly! Hahahaahah!

...

Welllll, you see... Ψ is Psi, i.e. the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet.. and is commonly used in physics to represent wave functions in quantum mechanics, such as in the Schrödinger equation and bra–ket notation: \langle\phi|\psi\rangle.. blah blah blah..

Anywayyy, this is what happens when you put that symbol in my name:
ELLIS + Ψ
= ELLIS + PSI
= Ellipsis i.e. ...

XD XD XD

HAHAHAHAHAH I WAS SQUEALING IN DELIGHT (and in silence too -- man that was hard!!!) when the light bulb went off. Yes, yes, I'm easily amused. :D :D :D

everything is awesome!

THE LEGO MOVIE IS THE AWESOMEST MOVIE EVA!!!!!

Hand them an Oscar (or two or three or a box), toss them a golden globe and a moonman and a golden popcorn and a golden horse (mm much gold, so award), soak them in green slime, give them stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, induct them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...... because they. are. worth. it. Oh man.

Maybe this is the universe making it up to me after having to suffer through 40mins of the worst movie ever haha!

I loved the stop-motion CGI, I loved the characters (best Batman ever - move over, Bale!), I loved the explosions of colours (and explosions in general); I loved the hilariously lame lines - this baby's laugh-per-minute mileage was just stratospheric; I loved the wildly catchy Everything is Awesome and I still laugh out loud at Batman's dark and brooding song (Darknesssss...)  Hahahaha.. I thought the twist at the end was sweet and appropriate. I would love to watch this again in slow motion just so I could see every single block formation and catch every single line. I... could evidently go on gushing about this for a week!

Sigh~ It was a wyldride I hoped didn't have to end. But it did, and so do I with my review now because this was meant to be a quick break before I get back to work, but ah, my life is forever changed. Penchant for the dramatic, she has.

the right mood.

Hobbes
Do you have an idea for your project yet?

Calvin
No, I'm waiting for inspiration.
You can't just turn on creativity like a faucet.
You have to be in the right mood.

Hobbes
What mood is that?

Calvin
Last-minute panic.

back.

i sang back-up in church on Sunday for the first time after about 8 months of not singing. but it was at a different church, with a different team.

so was i excited? i don't know. was i nervous? mm not really.. about being on stage, yes, about singing, no. how did it go? erm it went normal. i might have sung a bit louder than i should. :\ i don't really know what to feel about it, but i miss my old team. i miss worship leading. i miss the whole.. experience.

anyway, i won't be able to sing often as the hubby goes preaching at other churches quite frequently (about 2-3 times a month) and i do go with him. but i will try to commit to once a month. honestly, being away so often makes it more difficult for me to settle into this new church (i still have trouble with many names and i find it embarrassing to have to ask again) but deeper down inside, i relish the fact that we are not there all the time, because the thought of getting to know a whole load of people makes me wanna just crawl into my closet and stay there till everyone leaves.

but i know it's inevitable.. it's times like this that i really wish my sanguine side would just take over and charm the socks off everyone. but the introvert part of me just decided it would be in charge.. so yeah.

oh well, the good thing is the people don't look like they are going to bite :D what i also like here is that there are people closer to my age, but whom i've not really spoken to yet. i'll just go with the flo' now.

anyways, this happened on Sat during practice. there was this backup singer who was with me, a young boy. i was chatting with him in between practice, and asked if he was studying and where. he said he's in form 6 and i found out that we were from the same alma mater -- st john's. and i was like "oh cool.. i went there too! gosh i'm your senior by many many years... let's see... that was way back in 96/97..." and then i jokingly asked, "so were you born yet?" and as he every so briefly paused to think, i was like "uh oh.." and he said "erm.. oh yes i was.. i was born in 1994."

and i was like -_____________________-

and then i was like T____________________________T

and i am still like T____________________________T

it kinda hit me on Sat, so i was on observing mode on Sun, but last night sealed the truth for me: i suck at making small talk. ok, a lot of people are not great at small talks either (i think i saw a how-to book in BookXcess once -- i should totally get it).. cos i sure wasn't alone in mumbling my way through the occasions.

i attended two weddings over the weekend [congrats to Charlotte & Simon, and Liling & Michael! :)], and BCM's 50th anniversary celebration [congrats! :) thanks to Steven & Angeline for the invites :)] at Sunway Resort yesterday. met a whole buncha people i knew from the past, and yet most of the conversation was just nothing more than lingering umms and polite smiles.

how are you?
where are you now?

and then what?

i'd try to recall if the person had updated anything on FB, i'd try to make some remarks along that. but those don't really cut it sometimes, plus my gold-fish memory was no help at all.

so where are you now?
[company name]
oh yeah. i knew that. i follow u on twitter.
[awkward silence~]
*surreptitiously slides away*

so you are back for a hol?
yeah, leaving soon... last day tomorrow.
oh ok.
[awkward silence~]
ooh where's your baby?
she's with my mom. hehe..
[awkward silence~]
*furiously plans exit strategy*
oh food is here! i'm gonna go get some..

so do you keep in touch with [another friend]?
erm not really.
[awkward silence~]
*stomach churns in discomfort*

so how is work?
like that la. busy period la, you know.
[awkward silence~]
*furiously plans exit strategy but realised i'm stuck in the same table*

yeah i had a bunch of those the past three days. the thing is, i was really excited to see some of these old friends again, cos u you know, at one point in my life, we actually had proper conversations and shared genuine laughter. and now all we have are reduced to how-are-you-fine-thanks-and-you?

and then there were the strangers on the table. i'd think -- ooh potential friends! -- but as you chat on, there's only so much you could ask in an introductory meeting without crossing the privacy/stalker line. and worse if the person does not ask anything in return, and the others practically pretended that i wasn't at the table. there was just a lot of cricket chirping after 15mins.

so how la? see why i'm not in PR? :|

there are two things i don't like (among a million others):
  1. joining groups on facebook cos they are so so lame e.g. I bet Manchester United can reach 50,000 fans before Liverpool! (srsly, who cares?). admittedly some of them are rather funny, like Yes I will eat your sample. But l have no intention of buying it. or I puttt extraa letterrss on myy wordss for no reasonnnn or "Because I'm Awesome" IS the answer to all questions. (i got these off 1 friend who likes 320+ of these pages 0_o)

  2. the lemur king Julian on Madagascar cos he's so so annoying!

but i can't help myself with this:

hahaha! =D cracks me up every time.

got this cyanide strip from zul yesterday, but i only saw it when i checked my email this morn.

so lame right.

but guess what my random (and only) tweet was *yesterday*.

...

right after i posted that, i actually thought about the stupid "a head" pun and laughed to myself.

this is too freaky! hahaha..

Monday, February 8, 2010

i would text my parents in Chinese sometimes, using whatever limited characters i could recognise. and i think my mom kinda overestimated my ability to read Chinese.. cos i woke up at 6.30 this morning to her SMS which, among others, contained these characters:

孩子们,妈妈打胜病魔..你们回家后可以好好为我......精力.. and 4 last characters which read like a CNY greeting like 恭喜发财 or something like that (it wasn't la, but i don't know what it meant. the pinyin goes stg like 'yuan man ji chang'{?})

in my groggy state, i could only recognise 孩子们 (dear children), (hit), (demon), and 你们回家后可以好好为我 (when you reach home, you must do [something] for me).. (spirit?)..

this obviously freaked me out because she was still in the hospital.. what's this about hitting demons?? and do what when we go home?? you can imagine what went thru my mind. i dialled her number immediately.

me: what happened, ma? what is your SMS saying??

mom: you ah.. sometimes when i call you, the phone will ring off the hook and you wouldn't pick up. what are you doing up so early?

me: yaaa.. i gotta get to work, ma. so what's going on??

mom: no la. i just said that i [reads out SMS to me]. you understand?

me: err no.

mom: 打胜病魔 means i've overcome my fever already (literally, have victory over the fever demon.. wha-? who talks like that?!). and ["CNY greeting"] is.. [lost in translation]..

me: *relieved but still groggy* uh huh. glad u r ok.. take care, ma. i gotta wake up dy..

aiyo MOM!
